We all had cabin fever after a week of being locked up inside (see previous blog) so on Sunday we packed the kids and at least half of our worldly belongings in the car and spent the day at Alma Park Zoo.
It was great because not many people had decided to risk a day out as the weather is still very unpredictable, which meant that we had plenty of room to run and play (and scare the animals) and there weren't any queues.
We had a look at some koalas, monkeys, deer, an emu, camels, very cute baby red pandas, lizards, snakes and birds, and fed the kangaroos. Liam and Zane patted a crocodile and a python (someone had to look after James so I graciously hung back from that activity). We took lots of pictures and we even rolled up Liam's cords to expose his English-tourist-style socks and sandals, to really get into the holiday mood! After a pit stop at the cafe we headed over to the Friendly Farm where we fed some cows, sheep, goats and baby chicks. Zane tried to tell me a goat was really a sheep but of course, being a New Zealander I am well aware of what a sheep looks like, so I set him straight. Liam was very distressed when a sheep ate his whole bag of animal food, the paper bag included!! Zane and I tried to supress our giggles as Liam watched in dismay while the sheep chewed its prize. I wish I had a photo, it was priceless!
Patting the python
Saying hello to a resident peacock
(who poked his head inside the pram to investigate the sleeping James!)
Feeding the kangaroos (prior to Liam's bag of feed being sheep-napped!)

Enjoying nature... aaah you can almost smell the sheep dung!
